Who is a Candidate for Veneers?
A beautiful smile can transform your face, helping you radiate confidence and assurance. However, if your smile is somehow less than perfect, it can just as quickly take a toll on your self-esteem. Problems like uneven teeth, unsightly stains and discoloration, superficial chips and cracks, and worn away enamel can dull the appearance of your smile.
For most of our patients with these cosmetic concerns, dental veneers can go a long way in restoring their self-worth. It is important to know that not every one of our patients is going to be a good candidate for dental veneers, though, which is why we here at Harmony Dental are careful to fully assess you to make sure that veneers are a good fit for you.
Am I a Good Candidate for Porcelain Dental Veneers?
When more invasive orthodontic treatment is not a viable option for you, then you may be giving dental veneers a hard thought. If you have mild chips or cracks in your teeth but are not looking to have them extracted or replaced with implants, dental veneers can help not only conceal these blemishes but also make your teeth stronger and more durable. Dental veneers are also great for patients who have teeth that are uneven in shape or size, giving them a more uniform appearance. Even spaces and gaps between your teeth can be hidden with dental veneers.
Dental veneers are a thin sheet of tooth-colored porcelain, and they may be exactly what you need to make your smile look its best. The sad fact is, though, that not everyone may be a good candidate for dental veneers. While this procedure is safe and routine, we do have requirements that must be met before we can fit a patient with dental veneers.
For instance, you must already be in good oral health before we can move forward with dental veneers. If you have an active infection or tooth decay, we need to address that first before we can proceed with the veneers. We will have to start by treating any periodontal disease to prevent future tooth loss or infection. Tooth decay must also be taken care of first to help ensure the longevity of our veneer. We also need to confirm that you do practice good oral hygiene, which includes making sure you brush your teeth twice a day and floss nightly.
Afraid You Might Not Be A Candidate?
Patients who lack sufficient dental enamel may not be good candidates for dental veneers either. This is because we do need to abrade the surface of your tooth and remove some of the enamel to make sure the veneer fits securely. If you do not have enough dental enamel, this can prevent us from fitting the veneer to your teeth. Lastly, we also need to make sure you do not grind your teeth at night (a condition known as bruxism). This is because grinding your teeth can lead to the veneer cracking or breaking.
