Who is a Candidate for Invisalign?
 Most of us are, to some degree, familiar with the concept of dental braces. We all have known somebody who had them done as a teenager, complete with the array of metal wires and brackets. Fortunately, nowadays dental work can be much more discreet with the introduction of Invisalign dental aligners.
Comprised of two clear thermoplastic trays, Invisalign can straighten teeth, removing gaps and spaces, and fix a wide array of cosmetic concerns. However, it is important to know that not every one of our patients that we meet here at Harmony Dental is going to be a good candidate for Invisalign, which is why we advise a consultation with us to help answer any questions you may have about them.
Am I a Good Candidate for Invisalign Clear Aligners?
Invisalign is a great option for many people, giving them a beautiful and healthy smile without unsightly metal braces or other more invasive treatment options. If you have concerns about the appearance of your smile, you may be considering Invisalign as a treatment option for yourself. If you struggle with embarrassment or difficulty with your smile because you have uneven gaps and spaces between your teeth, a mild overbite or underbite, crooked teeth, a little bit of overcrowding, or other mild malocclusion issues like a crossbite or an open bite, then Invisalign may be able to help you.
The fact is, though, that not everyone is going to be a good candidate for Invisalign. Patients with severe orthodontic concerns may not be a good fit for Invisalign. Patients who are impatient and have realistic expectations about their course of treatment may also need to educate themselves further before they start Invisalign. People who not able to commit to the entire course of treatment may also be advised against pursuing it.
Invisalign does require dedication. You need to be aware that you can only have your aligners out for no more than two hours per day. You also must be certain that you will be able to keep all of your dental appointments with us for adjustments and maintenance.
Lastly, we may want to make sure you are old enough before we start you with Invisalign. While they are absolutely a fantastic option for younger individuals and adolescents, we do want to make sure all of your permanent teeth have grown in before we begin. Adults and older teens, however, are usually very good candidates for Invisalign.
On the other hand, many people respond very well to Invisalign. If you have problems with dental spacing or minor issues with an overbite or underbite, then you may find yourself very happy with Invisalign. People who want to be taken seriously in the business world also reach for Invisalign because it is subtle and discreet, allowing them to grow in their career while improving their smile. Those who struggle with keeping their teeth clean with conventional braces often love Invisalign since they can take the trays out to brush and floss and eat.
