What to Do First if You Have Trauma to Your Teeth or Mouth

If you are experiencing a dental emergency it is important to try to stay calm. It can be frightening if you see blood or bruising, but staying calm will help your body recover. You will need one of our dentists to take a look at your mouth immediately, as dental trauma needs to be addressed without waiting. That said, our team is always available to help and we can help set your mind at ease during an initial consultation.

Our dentists will examine your mouth to ascertain how much damage there might be from the trauma. We can quickly determine how to proceed.

Common Dental Trauma

Trauma to your mouth could result from a variety of reasons. For starters, we see a lot of dental trauma as a result of car accidents and other sudden impact events. Any time your mouth takes an impact, you should have your teeth examined.

Sometimes dental trauma can be as simple as a tooth that grew in your mouth at an angle, which causes pain. In a case like that, we will give you a lot of options on how to proceed, as we might be able to correct the growth of the tooth, or we could talk about extraction if that is necessary.

Slip and fall cases also make up a lot of the dental trauma we see, if you are unfortunate and land hard on your mouth or face. No matter how your dental trauma occurred, our team of dentists can help you recover and regain your smile.

How Different Injuries Are Treated

Dislodged Tooth

If you have dislodged a tooth, then your tooth will need to be stabilized. Our dentist will use a splint to get your loose tooth back in place.

Damaged Tooth

If the surface of the tooth has been damaged, fillings, inlays, onlays or a dental crown may be required. A root canal may be necessary if the pulp in the center of the tooth has been exposed.

Knocked Out Tooth

If your tooth is not loose but knocked out of your mouth, you will need to see our team immediately. If you see our dentist, then we might be able to save your tooth and reattach it to your mouth. If it cannot be saved, then we will work with you to place another root implant inside your mouth to plug the gap.

Consider first reinserting the tooth and ensuring it is in the correct position. If you find it difficult to reinsert your tooth, consider placing it in a cup with water or milk. This helps to preserve the teeth before you consult our emergency restoration services.

How We Treat Dental Trauma

Our dentists treat each case independently. No two mouths are the same, and no two traumas are the same. We will adapt to whatever caused your trauma and determine the best path forward.

We can suture any cuts and abrasions to your gums or soft tissue injuries, and we will give a variety of treatment options if your teeth are cracked, chipped, or missing.

What to Expect in Recovery from Trauma

Facial trauma and emergencies need to be addressed immediately. Dental trauma can cause problems for your mouth if it is not treated quickly. If you need an examination, please call Harmony Dental at right away and we will get you the help you need.
