Dentures and Partials

Losing your teeth does so much more than just affect the quality of your smile. When you suffer tooth loss, your entire life is affected. Biting and chewing become more challenging, as does speaking. Your facial appearance also changes as your cheeks and lips sag and wrinkles form. Replacing your missing teeth is essential for restoring the functions of your missing teeth, your smile, and your quality of life. Harmony Dental can provide treatment with complete and partial dentures.

What Causes Tooth Loss?

Tooth loss has many causes. In some cases, the teeth fall out on their own. In others, the teeth need to be extracted. Common causes of tooth loss include
•  Gum disease.
•  Facial trauma.
•  Severe tooth decay.
•  Bruxism.

What are Dentures?

Dentures are a traditional solution for replacing missing teeth. They are a removable prosthetic that has been in use for hundreds of years. The restoration consists of false teeth set into a rigid base that relies on your gums for support. Over the years, dentures have undergone numerous changes, improving their appearance and functionality. Modern dentures have acrylic resin teeth and a gum colored acrylic base. The teeth are designed to look exactly like real teeth. The base is colored to match your natural gum tissue, allowing the base to blend in more effectively. They are also much less bulky.

Complete Vs Partial Dentures

When most people picture dentures, the image that comes to mind is a complete denture. Complete dentures are made to replace an entire arch of missing teeth, whether this is your top arch, your bottom arch, or both. Before receiving your complete denture, we first extract any unhealthy teeth that are still in the arch. Next, an impression is taken, and your complete denture is designed and created.

A partial denture is used to replace a section of missing teeth, which prevents the need to extract perfectly healthy teeth. Much like complete dentures, it is made from an impression of your mouth. It is also made from the same materials. In addition to being supported by your gums, partial dentures also have metal clasps that attach to your healthy teeth. This provides extra support for your restoration.

Benefits of Dentures

Dentures provide several benefits including
•  Restoring your ability to eat many of your favorite foods.
•  Restoring your speech.
•  Improving your digestion and nutrition.
•  Improving the quality of your smile.

Caring for Your Dentures

Taking care of your dentures is essential. Dentures need to be taken out and cleaned every night. After removing your dentures, brush them gently with a soft bristled brush and denture paste or soap and water. Your dentures should be left out at night, which allows your gums to rest. They should be left in a glass of water or denture cleaning solution to soak. This prevents them from drying out and warping. Before going to bed, brush and floss your healthy teeth, your gums, and your intraoral tissues. By keeping your dentures and mouth clean, you ensure your oral health and that your dentures provide you with optimal functioning.

With dentures, we can help to restore the functions of your missing teeth, give you back your confident smile, and improve your overall quality of life.
