Dental Bridges

Suffering tooth loss is a big deal. Even losing a single tooth can cause many complications. However, if the tooth is lost at the back of the mouth, out of sight, many people think that it is not a big deal and therefore does not need to be replaced. The tooth may not be visible, and your smile not noticeably affected but losing that one tooth can significantly affect your entire life. Replacing a missing tooth is essential. Harmony Dental can help with a bridge.

Why Do I Need to Replace a Tooth?

Losing a tooth causes several issues.
•  Biting and chewing become more challenging. This can impact your digestion and nutrition.
•  Your speech may suffer.
•  Food can get stuck between your teeth, increasing your risk for tooth decay and gum disease.
•  Bite pressure becomes uneven, increasing the risk of tooth damage.
•  Your teeth can shift out of alignment, altering your bite. This impacts your oral health and your smile, even if the missing tooth is out of sight when you smile.

What is a Bridge?

A bridge is a common restoration used to replace a missing tooth. It can replace up to three consecutive teeth. There are a few different types of bridges, including:
•  Cantilever. A cantilever bridge consists of a pontic tooth, or replacement tooth, that is attached into place using a crown on only one side of the false tooth.
•  Maryland. Also called a resin-bonded bridge, this type of bridge uses wings that are bonded to the backs of the adjacent, or abutment, teeth.
•  Fixed. A fixed bridge is the most common type of dental bridge. The pontic tooth has a dental crown on each side of it. The crowns fit over the adjacent teeth, anchoring the restoration in place.

Why Get a Bridge?

There are many different benefits associated with a bridge.
•  The pontic tooth fills in the empty space left behind by your missing tooth.
•  Your biting and chewing abilities are restored. This can help to improve your digestion and nutrition.
•  Bite pressures are evenly restored.
•  Your speech is restored.
•  A bridge can help to improve the quality of your smile.
•  Your teeth are prevented from shifting out of alignment.

How is a Bridge Placed?

It takes two appointments to place a bridge. During the first appointment, we first prepare the abutment teeth. This is exactly like preparing teeth for crowns. Done under a local anesthetic, we remove a portion of the enamel from the abutment teeth to make them smaller. This ensures that the crowns, and your bridge, will fit perfectly and naturally in with the rest of your teeth. An impression of your mouth is taken and sent to our dental lab, where it is used to design and create your custom restoration. At your second appointment, we check the bridge for fit, bite, and the appearance and secure it into place on the abutment teeth.

A bridge provides you with an effective way to replace a missing tooth. It can restore the functions of your mouth, improve your oral health, and help to restore or protect, the quality of your smile.
